9 Day – New Year & Northern Lights
Iceland has become internationally famous for its intense, and firework-filled New Year’s Eve celebration. Icelanders spend a lot of money on fireworks each year, partly because they love the color display on New Year’s Eve, but also because they are supporting the Icelandic Rescue Teams that heavily rely on income based on firework and Christmas tree sales each year. People start shooting a couple of fireworks a couple of days before New Year’s Eve and continue until the 6th of January, but of course, most of them are shot around midnight on New Year’s Eve. Experience New Year with us and let us take you to the best spots to enjoy the show.
All-inclusive New Year travel package! Start your adventure with Northern Lights excursion which will be the focus of the trip together with the New Year Celebration.
Explore the Golden Circle, visit Thingvellir National Park, Geysir Hot Springs, Gullfoss Waterfall, enjoy a rare lunch experience at the unique Friðheimar Greenhouse restaurant. Enjoy the new Sky Lagoon and relax after a tour around Reykjavík city, the northernmost capital of the world.
The South Coast 2 day tour includes waterfalls, glaciers, glacier lagoons, Diamond Beach, Reynisdrangar and Reynisfjara Black Beach, and Fjardargljufur Canyon. Adventure out on the sea to look at whales and drive an ATV in the amazing Reykjanes Peninsula GEOPARK. Explore one of the largest lava caves in Iceland, Raufarhólshellir. After this adventure explore Reykjanes Peninsula GEOPARK, to look at the geology, volcanology, geothermal formations, mud polls, and steaming hot spring and end the day in the relaxing atmosphere in the Blue Lagoon.
Arrival at Keflavík airport, where the tour guide and driver waits for you. Transfer to the accommodation in Reykjavík.
Northern lights hunt in the evening. We will find the right spot for the Northen Lights tonight and enjoy this magnificent nature phenomenon. A 3* hotel in Reykjavík.
THINGVELLIR NATIONAL PARK AND ÖXARÁRFOSS WATERFALL
Start the day by visiting Thingvellir National Park. Thingvellir is characterized by a tectonic rift valley and marks the rifting of the Eurasian and North American plates from each other. In 930 the Icelandic Parliament, the first democracy in the world, was established at Thingvellir. Thingvellir became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004. Enjoy a short walk to Öxarárfoss waterfall.
STROKKUR AND THE GEYSER AREA
Did you know that the English name “geyser”, derives from the one and only in the Haukadalur area in Iceland? The geyser Geysir itself erupts boiling water up to 70 meters but is almost inactive now. Strokkur, only a few meters apart from Geyser, erupts on average every 5 minutes.
GULLFOSS, GOLDEN WATERFALL
Near Geysir is the Gullfoss Waterfall, which probably tops the list of being the most beautiful waterfall in Iceland. Enjoy the view from above and walk down the path to get close to the powerful waterfall.
FRIÐHEIMAR GREENHOUSE FARM AND HORSE VISIT
At Friðheimar greenhouse, tomatoes are cultivated, using geothermal heat and geothermally generated electricity. With a tropical climate inside, they have opened a restaurant, right there in the tomato field. The main ingredients in their menu are, of course, tomatoes grown there. This is a very rare and unique lunch experience. On the way, we visit some friendly Icelandic horses.
Northern lights hunt in the evening. A 3* hotel in Reykjavík.
Start the day by Reykajvík Sightseeing and visit all the landmarks of the city. Visit the city center and learn about the history of the settlement and the life of people in Reykjavik throughout history. Visit Harpa Opera House, the sculpture called Sun Voyager, and Höfði House. Enjoy the spectacular view of Reykjavík at Perlan.
After a Reykjavík sightseeing tour, unwind in the relaxing new Sky Lagoon spa. Enjoy the oceanside geothermal spa with an amazing view of the North Atlantic ocean. Geothermal bathing is a tradition in Iceland, using the naturally warm geothermal water to warm in an otherwise cold nordic climate. Immerse yourself and enjoy the seven rituals, a unique seven-step experience. A 3* hotel in Reykjavík.
You will be taken to a Bonfire near you for the New Years Celebration. A 3* hotel in Reykjavík.
Enjoy a Whale Watching tour from Reykjavik after lunch, where you will be able to experience a variety of sea-life, including minke whales, humpback whales, harbour porpoises, and white-beaked dolphins among other whale species. A comfortable and unique experience while making sure the environment is protected and respected in every way possible. A 3* hotel in Reykjavík.
Seljalandsfoss is a 60 m high waterfall, beautifully located and exceptional because you can enjoy it from behind. A path takes you around the waterfall and standing behind it is a rare and unique experience. However, on very cold days the path can be closed because of ice, but then you have the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful icy landscape.
Skógafoss is one of the most famous waterfalls in Iceland. It is also 60 m high and about 25 m wide. Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss are both in glacier rivers, meltwater from Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull. Eyjafjallajökull is now famous for its 2010 volcanic eruption that disrupted air traffic in Europe.
Sólheimajökull is an outlet glacier, flowing out of the ice cap Mýrdalsjökull. Underneath Mýrdalsjökull is the famous volcano Katla. Glaciers are retreating and disappearing around us at an unprecedented rate. It is predicted that in a few decades the glaciers in Iceland will all be gone.
At Dyrhólaey there is an amazing view of the south coast landscape and black beaches. Dyrhólaey is a 120-meter high promontory that the sea has eroded from the headland. In summer Dyrhólaey is rich in birdlife, the most common, the puffin. Note, in spring during nesting Dyrhólaey is closed.
Iceland is a volcanic island, made up mainly of basaltic material that is black in colour. Hence, the “Black Beaches”. The black beach was, in 1991, ranked as one of the ten most beautiful non-tropical beaches in the world. On the beach, there are remarkable basalt columns. Reynisdrangar is a sea stack, a geological formation made by wave erosion of surrounding material.
Vík village is a small village south of Mýrdalsjökull glacier.
Northern lights in the evening from the hotel. A 4* hotel near Skaftafell.
Skaftafell National Park belongs now to a larger, Vatnajökull National Park, which covers Vatnajökull, the largest glacier in Europe, and the surrounding wilderness.
An amazing glacier walk on Sólheimajökull glacier. The guide will provide you with the appropriate equipment and prepare you for the amazing walk on the unique landscape on a glacier.
JÖKULSÁRLÓN GLACIER LAGOON AND DIAMOND BEACH
Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon is a beautiful lagoon in front of a calving glacier. We will enjoy the amazing view of floating icebergs in a lagoon and walk between them at the black beach, which is sometimes referred to as The Diamond Beach. A boat trip in the lagoon is optional and can be booked on location or in advance with us. The sailing tour between icebergs and close to the glacier makes the visit even more memorable.
BLUE ICE CAVE
In this tour visit unique ice caves in one of the Vatnajökull outlet glaciers. We always visit the best available ice cave possible that very day. It may be different in between days which ice cave we visit depending on weather and other natural conditions. A 3* hotel in Reykjavík.
The fun and exciting Lava Beach tour runs through historic lava fields, the old harbour area Hópsnes that now serves as a recreational outdoor area with abandoned dramatic shipwrecks and over hundred-year-old foundations from the beginning of Grindavík’s settlement that remains unspoiled and protected for a reminder of the old life. Continue the adventure by riding along the coastline with twisties through fun and mildly challenging mountain trails offering sightings that feel other-worldly. The mountain trail leads to the black sandy beach of Selatangar (Sealbay). In this area, there are old fishing huts from sub 11th century where fishermen were stationed for outgrowing until 1886. See the foundations of their settlements where they only had carved lava rocks to build their huts and sheds from, using driftwood as rooftops.
LAVA CAVE EXPLORATION
After your ATV tour in the black lava, go on an adventure into a natural lava cave, called Raufarholshellir. Raufarholshellir was created about 5.200 years ago, in a volcanic eruption, called Leitarhraun. Raufarhólshellir is the fourth-longest lava tube in Iceland, about 1,360 meters (4,460 ft) long and with a typical height of at least 10 meters (33 ft) and width up to 30 meters (98 ft). Take a tour of this extraordinary natural phenomenon under guidance from an experienced guide.
We will drive past Lake Kleifarvatn, which is a Lake formed solely by plate tectonics and rifting of the earth crust, the Eurasian and North American plates away from each other.
Seltún is a beautifully coloured geothermal area. The geothermal activity brings to the surface bubbling mud pools and steaming ground and colourful solfataras. The beautiful colours are due to sulphur and white and yellowish-brown sulphates are deposited.
GUNNUHVER HOT SPRING
One of the hottest places in Iceland is Gunnuhver. The temperature below the surface amount to about 300° C in this hot spring. Gunnuhver is named after a female ghost, named Gunna, that was laid there.
BRIDGE BETWEEN TWO CONTINENTS
The Bridge Between Continents is a small footbridge over a major fissure, which is formed by tectonics and rifting of the two continental plates, Eurasian and North American plates, from each other.
REYKJANES LIGHTHOUSE AND CLIFFS
After passing the Reykjanesviti lighthouse, the oldest lighthouse in Iceland, we drive towards the sea where we enjoy a breathtaking view of the Atlantic Ocean, high cliffs and black rock formations.
Blue Lagoon is one of the best natural spas in the world. The history of the Blue Lagoon can be traced back to 1976 when a reservoir was formed in Svartsengi from the work of the Geothermal Power Plant Svartsengi. People discovered that the soil had a positive effect on the skin, especially for those suffering from psoriasis skin disease. Since then the Blue Lagoon has become one of the world’s most amazing baths and spas in the world.
Included is Comfort Ticket to the Blue Lagoon (admission, towel, Silica mask and 1 drink).
